Focus

“The keyboard is not random. It repeats one visual map.”

Decode

  • 01The keyboard repeats groups of two black keys and three black keys.
  • 02C sits immediately before every two-black-key group.
  • 03F sits immediately before every three-black-key group.
  • 04Naming the natural notes in order: C–D–E–F–G–A–B.
  • 05The same map transfers across every octave of the instrument.

Key Idea

One visual map, repeated across the whole keyboard.

  • Two black keys → C is the white key directly to their left.
  • Three black keys → F is the white key directly to their left.

Practise Now

  1. 01Find five different C keys across the instrument without using labels or stickers.
  2. 02Find five different F keys the same way, saying the name aloud each time.

What you should be able to do

You can locate C and F anywhere on the keyboard without labels and name the natural notes in order.
