Focus

“When the key changes, the chord names change — but the numbers do not.”

Decode

  • 01Core patterns: 1–4–5–1, 1–5–6–4, 6–4–1–5, 2–5–1, 1–6–2–5–1.
  • 02Converting each pattern into chord names.
  • 03Transposing the same pattern across C, G, F, D and Bb.

Key Idea

Numbers are fixed. Names are relative to the key.

  • Learn the number pattern once, then transpose it everywhere.

Practise Now

  1. 01Choose one progression pattern and transpose it into two new keys.
  2. 02Say the chord names aloud before playing each key.

What you should be able to do

You can convert a numbered progression into chord names and transpose it into new keys on demand.
